Wolfgang Prodinger completed his medical studies at the University of Innsbruck in 1987, earning his doctorate. Beginning in 1988, he worked as a university assistant at the Institute of Hygiene in what was then the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Innsbruck. In 1999, he qualified as a professor (habilitation) in Hygiene, Microbiology, and Preventive Medicine at the same university. His interest in advancing medical education was sparked by his involvement in the reform of the human medicine curriculum (introduced in 2001) and was further strengthened by completing the Master of Medical Education (MME) program at the University of Bern. At the newly established Medical University of Innsbruck, Prodinger gained extensive academic and administrative experience starting in 2004 through his work on various committees, including the Curriculum Commission, which he chaired several times. He also served as program director of the human medicine degree program and as academic director of the Skills Lab. In October 2021, Wolfgang Prodinger was appointed Executive Vice President for Teaching and Academic Affairs at the Medical University of Innsbruck for the presidential term through 2025. Since October 1, 2025, he has continued to serve in this role under the new President, Gert Mayer.
