International funding

Interreg.

The Interreg VI-A program is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Although the focus of these programs is not on research per se, cooperative, cross-border research projects are possible in some parts of the program. However, a possible funding gap should also be noted here, as the projects are not fully funded. The following are particularly relevant for Tyrolean institutions:

EUREGIO Science Funds

At irregular intervals - approximately every three years - the Euregio Tyrol/South Tyrol/Trentino publishes a call for tenders for multi-year research projects in basic research. It is mandatory that institutions from all three regions are involved.

Research Südtirol/Alto Adige – Competition announcement

The research program of the province of South Tyrol usually publishes a call for research projects every two years, which can be submitted thematically open. If institutions from Tyrol or Trentino are involved, at least one partner from South Tyrol must be involved. A maximum of 10 submissions per Austrian university are possible as coordinators and an unlimited number as partners.

US Grants

European institutions are also largely eligible to participate in the US funding system. The  NIH (National Institute of Health), for example, has concluded a specific agreement with the Health Cluster of the Horizon Europe program, which guarantees reciprocal equal rights for European and US partners. However, other funding bodies also offer the opportunity to participate. The Department of Defense and the Department of Health and Human Services  for example, have a particularly large number of health-related calls for proposals.
