Research Data Management (RDM)

Research data management (RDM) deals with the management and organization of research data. Various measures can be taken to manage data generated in research securely and efficiently. One key aspect is the creation of a data management plan (DMP), which describes how to handle the generated and/or reused data.

A sustainable, open approach to research data and publications promotes transparency, reproducibility and subsequent use of research results and is part of ensuring good scientific practice. Many funding bodies also rely on open research data. At the same time, data sets are often requested by journals and publishers during the review phase or can be published in data journals.

Data description
Data descriptions, so-called metadata, are an essential element to enable the retrievability and reusability of research data.
Data descriptions should be available for all research data in order to be FAIR in accordance with the research data guidelines of the Medical University of Innsbruck. If the research data cannot be published, archiving the metadata, i.e. the data describing the dataset, is particularly important.

Long-term archiving
For the long-term archiving of research data, subject-specific or interdisciplinary repositories are suitable, which can be found in re3data.org with their respective properties. The Medical University of Innsbruck recommends filing in the institute's own community on Zenodo. In addition to the long-term archiving of research data, it is often necessary to submit supplementary data to a publication. Some journals only review articles if data is uploaded to a repository in advance. However, filing as supplementary data does not fulfill the FWF's criteria for filing research data in the sense of the FWF's Open Access guidelines.

Licensing
The reusability of research data depends on legal and ethical requirements. At the Medical University of Innsbruck, the research data guidelines apply. In the case of personal data, data protection regulations must be observed. In order to ensure legal security, not only good archiving is required, but also secure licenses. For FWF projects, the use of the CC-BY 4.0 version is generally recommended.
